Markus Winter

I like to listen to materials.

A Practice Shaped by Intuition, Scholarship, and Spatial Experience

My understanding of materials comes through touch and intuition. I studied interior design in Hanover and fine arts at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. I’m also a philosophy major and have a master’s in art history. Since 1991, I have worked in antiques, restoration, and spatial design. In 2002, I began working for Doris Leslie Blau in New York, curating the first Guglielmo Ulrich exhibition in the US at the Fuller Building.

In 2004, I opened my gallery, Markus Winter, in Berlin, where I exhibited the work of contemporary artists and architects, such as Ico Parisi. Around that time, I founded Lampedo, a secondary-market gallery. Becoming a Reiki master in 2018 has allowed me to bring a deeper awareness of perception and presence to my work. The book Berlin Deko, which I published with Don Freeman, is my latest project.
